We saw the doctor this week and so far things are continuing to progress well. At first I was concerned that I was gaining too much weight but the doctor looked at my numbers and said that my weight gain was right on track (phew!) We also heard the baby's heartbeat and A LOT of movement, which the hubby was very excited about :)
We also started Lamaze/Childbirth Preparation class this week. Surprisingly it was very informative and we look forward to going to class twice a week for the next three weeks. I especially enjoyed the last 15 minutes of class where the partners were instructed to massage the moms to help with relaxation. Ahhhhh....
I also just read that by now the baby is swallowing several ounces of amniotic fluid each day and that the taste of the fluid will differ from day to day depending on what I eat. According to researchers, babies who were exposed to certain tastes in utero via the amniotic fluid were more eager to eat foods with that same taste after birth. That's so cool! So I started to think about what I wanted my baby to taste, like - which veggies and fruits? which Filipino dishes? what other tasty delights? Then....
Unfortunately, this is also the week where I began to have terrible heartburn. At first it was just at night when I went to bed, but now I'm experiencing heartburn during the day. This is not so fun. I'm going to suck it up for as long as I can, then when I have to, I will take take Tums or other OTC medications. Ugh.
Oh well, sooner or later my little one will be exposed to chicken adobo, pansit, and all sorts of tasty delights!

Week 20
Exciting things so far this week:
(1) Our country celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
(2) Obama was sworn into office
(3) Baby and I are at week 20 - whoo hoo!!! :)
I'm getting bigger each week, and it's very exciting. Life truly is a miracle - I just read that if we're having a girl, her uterus is now fully formed and her ovaries are holding about seven million primitive eggs. If we're having a boy, his testicles have begun their descent from the abdomen to his scrotum. That's so amazing! I remember learning this in school, way back in the day, but now that I'm actually carrying a little one... I am in awe.
Considering we're at the mid-point of this pregnancy, we decided to check out baby furniture at Babies'r'us after visiting the doctor's office for yet another progesterone shot. While I have been doing some major comparison shopping online (high end to low end), getting feedback from other mommies, and researching best baby buys... my husband hadn't. So, when we walked into the store, the poor guy was in shock by the sheer number of things we will need and the cost of all of these items. Here are some of his memorable quotes from that experience:
(1) While looking at all the different cribs... "What!? You know, Jesus slept in a manger!"
(2) While looking at the different baby car seats... "You know, why can't someone invent something like a bubble - like a plastic bubble with gel in it - so you can just place the baby in that and he'll be protected at all times?"
(3) Anytime he noticed something was marked down/on sale... "Oh, it's on sale? Yeah, I like that one, let's get that one!" ...regardless of what it looked like.
Haha. Gotta love him!

Week 18
We made to to week 18 - yay!!! Thank goodness and what a relief. This was a huge milestone for us... we lost Angelina at 18 weeks back in 2006, so we're very happy that so far all is well.
According to the articles that I've been reading, I should be feeling the baby move soon. One article compared the fetal movement to "gas bubbles" - well, I certainly feel something, but I don't think it's the baby, I'm pretty sure it's just gas (hahaha!). No worries though, the doctor assured me that some mothers may not feel anything until week 20 or beyond so I shouldn't be concerned if I don't feel anything yet.
I've been going to the doctor's office every week to receive a progesterone shot. The first one was painful - super painful. I told the medical assistant that I did not want to see the needle (I hate needles). So she kept it out of site... until she had to put the tray down, right next to me, and out of curiosity, regretfully, I turned my head to look - it was a HUGE needle!!! I involuntarily screamed when she injected me and thankfully I was able to censor myself so that my fellow patients didn't have to hear the 4-letter words that were going through my head. Of course, I had to ask if she could use a smaller needle next time - and of course, the answer was no. Darn. Thankfully the second time around it wasn't as bad... hopefully I'll get used to it... I have to!
Many many thanks to the friends and family that have been sending me books and emailing me advice. I greatly appreciate it. I look forward to reading many books over the next several months and am currently enjoying online window shopping for the baby's nursery. Good times!
